Scoring, Building was an event and a pavilion. It won a competition put on by the Los Angeles art and architecture non-profit Materials & Applications. To see how a builder’s repertoire could engage design, industry rules were repeated excessively. Extra time was given for working materials beyond their intended use. Off-the-shelf products made building according to the instructions possible. The instructions were carried out using typical Type V construction, but activities like cutting, fastening, framing, and tilting were given more time for iteration.

A schedule set a rhythm for the appearance of formal and material effects. Typical project management schedules could not create evenly paced work patterns, so I chose a less common type. Location-based scheduling organizes work by continuous speeds instead of the more prevalent activity-based scheduling that prioritizes continuous tasks. Work is arranged as a function of time and distance, which makes location-based schedules spatial. In effect, the timeline was a sequencer that arranged material deliveries, payments, room making, and color changes.
